De-Posit: the deposit that stopped being cash.

De-Posit turned a familiar rental pain into a live proptech platform: tenants move in without a lump-sum cash deposit, while landlords keep protection.

The problem

A cash deposit problem hiding inside rental admin.

Before De-Posit, the deposit was a lump of cash and a stack of loose ends — and everyone in the rental chain carried a piece of it.

Tenants

Had to find a large cash deposit before moving in.

Landlords & agents

Still needed confidence that damage and arrears were covered.

The back office

Application details, approvals, payment questions, and refund disputes lived across email, spreadsheets, and WhatsApp.

The opportunity was not just a payment alternative. It had to make tenants feel relief, keep landlords comfortable, and give the operating team a workflow they could actually run.

Before · the paper trail

  • Deposit refund query (fwd: fwd:)
  • applications_final_v3.xlsx
  • Proof of payment? (WhatsApp, 23:41)
  • Dispute letter, unit 14B

Deposits, approvals, and disputes — scattered across inboxes, spreadsheets, and late-night messages.

What shipped

A rental deposit platform with the operational path built in.

The first version gave De-Posit a product-shaped path: application, approval, pricing, protection logic, and the admin visibility needed to run the new deposit model in market.

Hard decisions

The hard part was making the new deposit model feel safe enough to use.

This was close to money, property, trust, and risk. That meant the first version needed product judgement as much as code: what to automate, what to make visible, what to explain, and what to leave for the next build phase.

01

Constraints from day one

Money, trust, and approval flow were treated as product constraints from the first sketch — not integration details to sort out after the interface.

02

A tenant path built for first-timers

The application path had to be clear enough for someone renting for the first time, not only for the internal admins who run it every day.

03

Protection stays visible

The deposit mechanism changed behind the scenes, but the protection landlords rely on had to stay in plain view the whole way through.

04

Foundations that carry the next phase

The first version was built on foundations that could carry pricing, approval, and handover work after launch — not a prototype to throw away.

Outcome

Move-in without the lump sum. Protection without the doubt.

Cash deposits replaced with secure pre-authorisation — tenants move in without a lump sum, landlords keep full protection.

See it live at de-posit.co.za
  • Tenants can apply online without paying a lump-sum cash deposit up front.
  • Landlords keep a protection path instead of losing confidence in the rental process.
  • The product has a real operational workflow instead of a static lead form or brochure site.
